San Diego Comic-Con Movie Recap

By Alex Wen on July 31, 2014

With superhero movies and Star Wars becoming the forefront conversation in Hollywood, Comic-Con has evolved to become a center stage to showcase the latest and greatest coming into theaters. San Diego Comic-Con, largest convention of its kind, recently took place, with Marvel, Warner Bros. and many other studios giving sneak previews on their upcoming plans. These are the most notable updates on the biggest franchises coming out soon:

Marvel: Ever since Iron Man became a big hit, the Disney subsidiary has been striking gold with their Marvel Cinematic Universe. With Phase 2 winding down, the main focus is on the big sequel that is The Avengers: Age of Ultron. Footage from the film was shown to convention-goers and early reception seems largely positive. This film may be a case of too large to fail. While we can’t see the trailer, Marvel has released some concept art to tide us over. The other big update was from Ant-Man. Right before Comic-Con, there was some controversy surrounding Edgar Wright stepping down as director. The shake up caused some switches in actors and Marvel took this convention to reveal some of the supporting cast that’ll join Paul Rudd, Ant-Man himself. Evangline Lilly will be playing Hope Pym and Corey Stoll will face off against Ant-Man as Yellowjacket. While there was some speculation of Dr. Strange and Black Widow, the only other solid confirmation was a sequel for Guardians of the Galaxy. Marvel must be fairly confident in their space heroes.

Batman V Superman: Warner Bros. and DC Comics’ big response to The Avengers has been marked with skepticism and criticism. From the actor choices to the title choice, fans have been holding their breath to see if Zack Snyder can deliver. It’s hard not to get excited about Batman AND Superman, though. We also catch our first glimpse at Wonder Woman. There’s a lot riding on this film, as success will only ensure spin-off films for individual characters in the DC universe.

Video Games Films: As Sony announced at E3, they’ve been planning on taking a host of popular video game properties to the big screen. It’s hard to get excited about these releases being any good, as previous track records show. One of the more promising IPs, Uncharted, has a release date of June 2016. A far more exciting video game adaptation is the upcoming Warcraft. The Duncan Jones project has the credentials needed and the Warcraft series has the intricate amount of lore necessary to create an entertaining film.

Others: For better or worse, it’s a wealth of sequels, prequels and remakes. The more notable news is a Godzilla sequel, where Mothra, Rodan and King Ghidorah will be making appearances, and Skull Island, a King Kong prequel.

Between the fantastically received Interstellar trailer and multitude of films that Marvel has lined up, it’s safe to say that superheroes and science fiction are here to stay. They will be the guiding force in where Hollywood goes for the foreseeable future.
